If you are waiting for forgiveness, be prepared to wait, be prepared to stand in the path of time and wither. Respect that forgiveness is difficult, not all trespasses are equal and not everyone will heal according to your schedule.

~ Excerpt from “How to be a Person” by Shane Koyczan and The Short Story Long

This incredible spoken-word piece by avatar Shane Koyczan and The Short Story Long changed my life, especially #4 “Forgive”. PLEASE take the 5 minutes and 30 seconds it takes to listen to it.

For up into my 30’s, I lived with disdain and outright hatred for my father. He simply was not around, and I never really understood why. I lived with that pain for decades.

It was only after I accepted the circumstances, understood the why, and sincerely forgave him in my heart that my life was transformed. I never got to forgive him in person. It was only at his gravesite that I literally fell to my knees, and was able to communicate my forgiveness to “him”.

I swear “up to God” that the moment I truly released that anger, sadness, and regret that I could literally feel a weight removed from me right there at his gravestone. I know in my heart and soul that he heard my forgiveness and he lives with me, forever.
